Katelynn Elizabeth Simonds passed away at her home last Saturday (6). Spalding County firefighters told WAGA-TV in Atlanta that the fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. at the family’s home, outside the city limits of Griffin.
Investigators believe the fire originated on the lower floor and there is no suspicion of foul play. “Upon conclusion of the investigation, based on the information obtained, the fire was determined to have been of an accidental nature,” said Captain Rocky White, Spalding County firefighter, to WAGA-TV.
Katelynn was at home when the fire started, but instead of getting out, she went upstairs to get her dog named Little Man, according to WAGA-TV. The two couldn’t escape the fire, Katelynn’s family told the TV station.

“Katelynn was the happiest and most lively little girl, she loved to laugh. I will remember my sweet baby for her big heart, her sweet smile, and all the ways she helped others,” said Kristy Beecher Rollins, Katelynn’s mother, to the channel.
A friend of Katelynn’s mother, Meredith Smith, created a page on the online crowdfunding site GoFundMe to help the family “rebuild their lives.” The fundraising has a goal of $25,000. So far, over $17,000 has been raised.
“I’ve known Kristy for almost our entire lives, our moms were best friends. This is the worst thing that can happen to a parent. The pain and anguish she feels are unfathomable,” wrote Smith on the GoFundMe page.
